About Megan
Hi, I’m Megan, and I’m so glad you’re here! My mission is to connect as many partners of commercial fishermen as possible through relatable, helpful, and entertaining blog posts to make you feel less alone! I represent the girlfriends, fiancés, and wives of commercial fishermen, and together we are known as the Partners of Commercial Fishermen! #POCFishermen unite!
My husband, Chris, fishes for spiny lobster out of the Channel Islands in California and sockeye salmon in Bristol Bay, Alaska. Needless to say, I was so lost when we started dating. Season after season, feelings about this new POCF lifestyle bubbled up – some good, most bad – and without anyone to relate to, I turned to my blog and wrote 9 Things to Know When Dating a Commercial Fisherman. I was so surprised by the response that I thought, Thank God there are others out there who understand the joys and challenges of what POCFs go through! (See testimonials of others who can relate here!) Since then, our community connects through blog posts and Instagram comments, plus our private FB group just for partners of commercial fishermen that I hope you’ll join, too!
Professionally, I’m a freelance writer. I started writing in 2012 when I realized my favorite part of fashion designing (I’m an ex-designer) was writing the captions for my online store. Wanting a change, I moved from Charleston, SC, to Carpinteria, CA, and pitched to a local publication that gave me a chance. I now write 3 columns, features in newspapers and magazines (both local and national), and write under the pen name Elizabeth Rose for a confessional-type relationship column, I Heart. (Chris is known as “Jason” in I Heart stories. And yes, I bare it all!) You can read the columns at the top of this page under “Writing,” then scroll to the I Heart Column category. For a quick preview of some of the essays you’ll see, you can check out Last Dance with Mary Jane, the first time Chris and I met, along with The Good Fight about the biggest argument Chris and I ever had. It’s legit.
Born in Lawton, Oklahoma, and raised in Charleston, I lived around the world as a military brat until the age of 18, which means defining a hometown is not so easy. Fast forward to 2015, I was editor of the Sentinel in Santa Barbara, CA, when I met Chris. (The same paper that publishes I Heart!) A year after long-distance dating, we lived on a 34-foot sailboat for three years, traveling from Bellingham, Washington, to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, during two of them. After that, we came back to Chris’s hometown of Santa Barbara, California, where he took over his father’s spiny lobster fishing business. The season runs from October to March. We lived in a 1970s Airstream in Carpinteria, California for the first two seasons. In 2021, we ventured over the mountains to sublet a home in Ojai. We got married in April 2021 in Charleston, South Carolina. Check out our wedding here and here! 💙
Our dream has been to live bi-coastal in California and the Carolinas, and it’s finally coming true! We bought a *major* fixer-upper in Wilmington, North Carolina and we are stoked! She’s a 1912 late-Victorian Bungalow who needs lots of love and we’re gonna give it. Our slightly built-out Sprinter Van “GuitarĂ©” (pronounced “guitar-aye”) will get us from coast to coast between fishing season and the off-season. By the way, I have no idea what we’re getting into. We’ve never renovated a home before. And when I said she is a *major* fixer, I mean you can literally see outside through some of the walls. But just like sailing, another adventure awaits which means juicier posts for you. Whoo-hoo!
